What
Internet Service Provider should I use?
Southwestern
College does not recommend any particular Internet Service
Providers. Online classes are designed to work with a variety
of browsers and Internet Service Providers. Commonly used
browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape. If you use one of
these browsers
please be sure it is the latest version. You can check this
by going to the browser's home page and comparing your version
(click HELP, then ABOUT from your computer's browser window)
with their newest downloadable one.

How
long does my online class last?
Your
online class may meet the same length of time as on-campus
classes. If there are special meeting times (i.e. short session
courses), the dates will be listed in the class schedule. Contact
your instructor if you need more information.
Top
Where
and when does my online class meet?
Your
online class may require that you attend an on campus orientation. Consult
with your instructor to determine if this is a requirement
for your class. An online orientation is available at www.swc.cc.ca.us,
click on Online
Learning. Some
instructors will require that you meet on campus to take tests.
Other instructors may require that you meet in online discussion
boards, or virtual classrooms, with a study group.Generally,
your class work can be completed online within the calendar
dates set by your instructor. This does
not mean that online classes are self-paced. You must
meet deadline dates to complete assignments set by your instructor
just as you would in an on campus class.
Top
What
hours will my online class be available?
One
of the key benefits of your online class is that it's ALWAYS available.
The Internet is available 24 hours a day and so is your online
class. This does not mean you will be able to complete a
semester's worth of work in one week. Your
instructor will determine the pace of your course. This
simply means your instructor may make tests, assignments and
projects available only for a certain length of time. This
allows you and your classmates to work through the course together
and it promotes interaction with your classmates and your instructor.
Top
Will I have to purchase a textbook?
Your
online courses may require a textbook. Your instructor will
list the textbooks that will be used in your online class in
the course syllabus, or will inform you of the textbook requirement
by email or by telephone. Your textbook(s) can be purchased
at the Southwestern College Bookstore or wherever you can find
them. You can email the Bookstore at: swcbooks@swc.cc.ca.us

your instructor if you have any trouble.

Is
there a term paper required for my online class?

classes (such as English Composition) will probably require
you to write a paper. Your
instructor will include assignments, such as term and research
paper requirements in the class syllabus.

How
much time will I have to devote to my online class?
Students
often have the misconception that because a class is online
that it will not be as challenging as the on-campus version.
In fact, the opposite is true. Although online classes do not
take place in a traditional classroom, you should expect to
spend as much, if not more time and energy to successfully
complete an online class. Just like in the traditional classroom,
you are expected to complete assignments, take tests, write
papers and participate in discussions.
Top
How will I be graded?
You
will be graded much like in a traditional class. You will be
evaluated on various assignments, tests, quizzes, papers and
projects that are required by your instructor. The grading
policy for your online class will be outlined in the instructor's
syllabus, or communicated to you by email, telephone, or by
other means at the instructor's discretion.
Top
How
can I ask questions regarding my online class?
There
are several ways you can find answers to your questions. You
will have access to your instructor's
e-mail address, which will allow you to ask questions personally.
Another option would be to use the discussion boards to query
your classmates about course materials, assignments etc. The
important lesson that successful online students learn is to ASK questions!
Top
How
can I contact my instructor?
You
can refer to the Online
Instructor Directory located at www.swc.cc.ca.us click
on SWC Online and then click on your class link. Your primary
contact with your instructor will be via e-mail, discussion

will probably be outlined in your class syllabus. Your instructor
will let you know the method they prefer.
